Grayson Highlands State Park

Grayson Highlands State Park in southwestern Virginia is next to Mount Rogers (the highest point in Virginia) and hosts 3 miles of the Appalachian Trail. In the 1950s, a man named Bill Pugh started breeding Virginia Highlander horses on the mountain balds around Mount Rogers. When a portion became a state park, the ponies remained.
